The acrid smell of smoke assaults your senses, pulling you from sleep. Thick, choking fumes fill your small room, blinding you. You cough violently, scrambling out of bed and to the window. Throwing it open, you gasp at the horrifying spectacle – houses ablaze, people and animals scattering in terror.
“Annalise!” your mother screams, bursting into the room. “Darling, we must leave at once!” She grabs your wrist, pulling you along. “Mama, what’s going on?” you choke out, struggling to keep up. She stops, turning to you with wide, fearful eyes. “The King’s men are destroying the village.”
