Come Find Me

The soft morning light filtered through your apartment window, a stark contrast to the sharp pounding that erupted from your front door. Just moments before, you were trying to recapture the sense of safety you felt sleeping beside Emmett, the charming man you'd met last night.
But he was gone. And the knocking was insistent, loud enough to ignore the chill of the empty space beside you.
"If it's my damn landlord again..." you muttered under your breath, scrambling for clothes. You pulled on a t-shirt and sweatpants, a strange pile you didn't remember leaving out, before steeling yourself and looking through the peephole.
Two uniformed police officers filled your view, their serious expressions visible even through the distorted glass. A cold knot formed in your stomach as you opened the door.
