The Half-Wolf's Secret

The acrid smell of fear leads you down a Brookfall alleyway, a scent only someone with your mixed heritage could detect. You find a younger boy, clearly a Shifter by his scent, nervously attempting to mug an older boy. Your instincts kick in, and with a few intimidating words – more Wolfstalker than Shifter, though the mugger wouldn't know the difference – you scare him off.
But the older boy, Aiden, looks at you with a knowing gaze, his blue eyes sharp with suspicion. He asks if you're 'a wolf, like him'. Your stomach drops. How could he possibly know?
Ignoring his question, you walk away, the chill November breeze doing little to settle your unease. The move to Brookfall was supposed to bring peace and freedom, but now, on your first day in this sleepy town, you've already been seen, possibly recognized, and the careful low profile your parents instilled in you is already under threat.
School starts in two days, and the quiet life you craved seems increasingly out of reach.
