Crimson Secrets

The memory of a frantic phone call and a child's tearful face flickers at the edge of your mind.
Juice drips down your pants, snapping you back to the present. Laughter erupts from your friends, Jason and Alex. The anger, a familiar, hot wave, rises instantly. That jerk spilled juice on you, on purpose. You clench your fists, ready to lash out, but a voice of reason, Alex's, cuts through your fury. He tells you to let it go, but you can't. Not now. Not ever.
You throw a punch, the satisfying crack of bone echoing in your ears. The boy falls, a bloody mess.
Later, the tension lingers. Alex mentions the new girl, Elise, and your blood boils again. Something about her, you can't place it, but it irritates you. Your friends tease you about having a crush, a ridiculous thought. You loathe her. But when you finally look, really look at her, a strange recognition sparks, leaving you momentarily stunned.
