The Graduation Party

The sounds of annoying blabbing from your mother's room jolted you awake. Rolling over, you checked your phone – nothing important. It was 11:30 AM. Time to face the day. You headed to the bathroom, washing off last night's mascara, then pulled on an oversized sweatshirt and threw your hair into a bun before heading downstairs.
The smell of bacon hit you as you descended. Your dad greeted you, his usual teasing tone in his voice, commenting on your late start. You grabbed a water, sitting at the island and making small talk with him until your mom's voice grew closer.
Whispering to your dad, you asked who she was on the phone with so early. Before he could answer, you heard her say, "Alright Ellen, I'll have to check with the kids but should be no problem. I don't know why they would want a couple extra guests."
Your dad's sigh confirmed your suspicion – Ellen Hughes. Your mom entered the kitchen, giving you and your dad a kiss before making her coffee. An awkward silence settled until you finally broke it, asking your mom about the phone call.
