The Unexpected Earl

Bombay, 1858.
The air hung heavy with the recent history of rebellion and unrest. Inside a comfortable English home, Julia Andrews argued passionately with her mother.
"For the last time, I am not going to England!" Julia insisted, frustration lacing her voice.
Her mother, Diana, continued her embroidery, a picture of calm that belied the tension.
"Stop being unreasonable, Julia," Diana said softly, her gaze fixed on her needlework.
Julia threw her hands up. "Unreasonable? You're asking me to leave everything I know, everyone I love, and go to a foreign country! And I'm the unreasonable one?"
Despite her protests, ten days later, Julia found herself on a ship bound for London, accompanied by the insufferable Lord and Lady Grenville. Arriving in the smoggy city, she was greeted by her grandfather, the Earl of Carlisle, and introduced to a world of grand townhouses, societal expectations, and the unexpected charm of the notorious Duke of Adlington, who was, much to her annoyance, tasked with being her escort for the season.
