Her Encounter

April 2nd, 2007.
Heavy breathing filled the air as you ran through the dense forest, your small hand clasped tightly in your father's. The impending night pressed in, the chirping of birds a frantic soundtrack to your escape.
"Dad where are we going?" you managed to ask between gasps, your legs burning with exhaustion.
He slowed slightly, his gaze fixed ahead. "To a friend Denae. I'm sure we would be safe there."
Safe. The word felt alien. You dug your heels into the soft ground, forcing him to stop. "I'm tired, Dad."
He turned, his hazel eyes, so like your own, filled with compassion. He knelt and caressed your face. "I know but we need to move darling."
The memory fades, replaced by the bright afternoon sun six years later. "This is the best day of my life!" you chime, looking around the lavish restaurant where you sit with Axan.
