The Sin Eater's Bargain

The Sin Eater's Bargain
In a world where the living pay a heavy price for the sins of the dead, a young woman, Lillian Elmes, finds herself drawn to the enigmatic and feared Sin-Eater, Daniel Carver. Haunted by a mysterious incident from her childhood and the whispers that only she can hear, Lillian is determined to uncover the truth about the Sin-Eaters and the darkness that seems to follow them. But venturing into Daniel's world means confronting not only the village's deep-seated fear and superstition but also the unsettling connection she feels to the man they call the Devil.

The air in the parlour room is thick with death and grief, crammed with solemn faces. Seven-year-old Lillian clutches her mother's hand, trying not to look at her deceased Grand-Papa in the open casket. Suddenly, a tall, strange man and a frightened boy enter. The man approaches the casket, his large, rough hands forcing Grand-Papa's lips apart. Black smoke rises and is consumed by the man. Lillian gasps, her mother pulls her close, whispering a warning about the Sin-Eater's curse. As Lillian falls, overwhelmed, she sees the boy looking directly at her, his lips moving in a soundless whisper.

Seven years later, now nineteen, Lillian travels with her family to Lutwyche Hall for another funeral, that of Mr. Hawkstone. On the road, she sees a figure walking - Daniel Carver, the Sin-Eater. Her mother's fear is palpable. Later, while supposedly waiting with her friend Elizabeth and the Hawkstone children, Lillian and Elizabeth secretly observe Daniel in Mr. Hawkstone's study. As he performs a ritual, whispering a strange chant, Lillian feels a chilling cold, and Elizabeth claims Lillian was the one whispering.
