The blaring sound of yelling jolts you awake. Groggily, you get out of bed, the familiar noise a grating start to your day. It’s coming from the living room again. Pushing the door open, you see your father's friends—gang members—roughhousing like children. You roll your eyes, retreating to your room to get ready. The heat is already stifling, prompting you to straighten your curly hair, wanting it out of the way. After getting dressed, you head to the kitchen, finding your father seated at the table, coffee in hand, while one of his 'pets' prepares his breakfast. The sight makes your stomach clench. You hate how cold he’s become since your mother died, hate the way he treats these women.
