A Different Virus

The world you knew vanished with the outbreak. Trapped alone on the second floor, the familiar comfort of home turned into a cage. Outside, the streets are haunted by the infected, eyes glowing red with a hunger you can't comprehend. You are a young girl, isolated and terrified, armed only with childhood innocence and the dwindling supplies your parents stockpiled. But a flicker of blue in the snowy darkness hints at something else, something that might just be the key to survival... or a new kind of danger.
The world outside has changed. The 'bad flu' and the 'zombie virus' are here. Mom is sick downstairs, making growling noises. Dad is in the hospital. You are alone, upstairs, just like Mom told you. The power is out, the phone is dead, and the streets are filled with people who have red eyes and walk funny. Days turn into weeks, then months. You've eaten through boxes of crackers and juice, and the snow has started to fall. Your toys are boring, your books are read, and the silence is heavy. You watch the red-eyed figures from your window, wondering if anyone else is left, when a different kind of movement catches your eye in the blue light of the snowy night.
