Halo: Ark Fleet

The roar of the Magnetic Accelerator Cannon rattled the deck of the UNSC Moscow. Outside, the void was alight with the fury of battle. The Covenant had arrived at Mars Orbit, a terrifying vanguard to the inevitable assault on Earth. Rear Admiral Matthew Higgins, commander of the Ark Fleet, watched the desperate rearguard action unfold.
The massive Thermopylae-class Supercarrier, along with a handful of other vessels, turned to face the enemy, buying precious time for the evacuation fleet to escape. He saw the fiery destruction of the UNSC Manifest Destiny, a Phoenix-class transport carrying half a million souls and vital terraforming equipment, struck down by a Covenant cruiser.
With a heavy heart, he gave the order to focus fire, unleashing the Moscow's main battery in a vengeful strike. The alien vessel broke apart, a small victory in a looming defeat.
Minutes later, the rearguard action complete, the Moscow and the remaining ships of the Ark Fleet burned away from Mars, leaving the fate of Earth behind. As they prepared for their Slipspace jump, a strange blue beam lanced out from the direction of Pluto, striking the forming portal. The portal warped, twisting violently, and then swallowed the fleet whole. All went dark.
