A Call That Changed Everything

The smell of warm bread usually filled the air, a comforting constant in Reverie Brent's life. At nineteen, her world revolved around Pan de Carmen, the bakery she ran with her mom, Carmen, in their close-knit Manila neighborhood.
But one evening, the familiar scent was overshadowed by an unexpected urgency.
"REVERIEE, ANAKKK!!!!!"
Her mom's voice, sharp with something she couldn't quite place, sliced through the quiet.
"Ma? Ano pong nangyari? Bakit mukhang may problema po kayo?"
Reverie rushed downstairs, heart pounding, only to find Carmen beaming.
"Sige, pahinga muna tayo sa mga drama ha. Ang gusto kong sabihin, tumawag si Aunt Josephine mo!"
Aunt Josephine in New York. The name itself felt distant, almost like a character in a story.
"Si Tita Jo? Ano po iyon? Anong nangyari?"
Carmen's next words hung in the air, shimmering with disbelief and possibility.
"Anak, gusto ka niyang pag-aralin sa New York!"
